This short six (6) minute video comprises, as the title suggests, photos taken in Kathmandu when we visited there for the 2009 World Appreciative Inquiry Conference. They are mostly of the Thamel area near the Kathmandu Guest House where we were staying, although some show parts of the city a little further afield. The background music is of Nepali folk tunes, with grateful thanks to Sur Sudha (http://www.sursudha.com/), a talented Nepali musical group who (as their website says) are known as Nepal's musical ambassadors and are devoted to making music to disseminate a universal message of peae and harmony supporting the effort to alleviate poverty from the face of the earth. http://bjseminars.com.au

History of Kathmandu Old Kathmandu - Rare Photos of Kathmandu Valley (Photos are all copy righted to its oroginal owner. credit goes to original photographers. source: google and Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) History of Nepal nepal rana family history The Rana dynasty राणा शासन was a Khas dynastywhich ruled the Kingdom of Nepal from 1846 until 1951, reducing the Shah monarch to a figurehead and making Prime Minister and other government positions hereditary. Tyranny, debauchery, economic exploitation and religious persecution characterized Rana rule. This changed in 1951 with the promulgation of a new constitution, when power shifted back to the monarchy of King Tribhuvan. The dynasty is descended from Bal Narsingh Kunwar of Kaski who moved to Gorkha in the early 18th century and entered the service of Raja Nara Bhupal Shah around 1740, and of Bhimsen Thapa (1775–1839), who is counted among the National heroes of Nepal. Maharaja Jung Bahadur Rana जंग बहादुर राणा or Jung Bahadur Kunwar GCB, GCSI, June 18, 1817, Kathmandu, NepalFebruary 25, 1877, Borlang, Gorkha ) was a ruler of Nepal and founder of the Rana Dynasty of Nepal. His real name was Bir Narsingh Kunwar but he became famous by the name Jung Bahadur, given to him by Mathabarsingh Thapa, his maternal uncle. The history of the city of Kathmandu, which is inseparable from that of the Kathmandu valley, dates back to ancient times.[1] Archaeological explorations indicate that Kathmandu and the two other sister towns in the valley were the oldest towns and are traced to the period between 167 BC and 1 AD. Excavations conducted at Hadigaon and Lubhu in southern part of the valley, in Kathmandu, have unearthed brick walls and Stone Age tools. The extent of Kathmandu city today across the Kathmandu Valley In 1992, workers digging a trench for the foundation of a house in Maligaon in Eastern Kathmandu discovered a life size (171 x 49 cm) standing male figure carved in pale sandstone, clearly made in the Kushan style. The sculpture was donated by an early Licchavi or pre-Licchavi monarch, named Jaya Varman with an inscription on the pedestal. Although the identity of the figure is contested, it is the authors'[who?] opinion that it is likely Jaya Varman himself who is portrayed. It is the oldest known inscription from the Kathmandu Valley. "The inscription on this sculpture, clearly dated to samvat 107, most likely corresponding to AD 185, provides this previously missing evidence, and pushes back the epigraphical documentation of royal rule in the Kathmandu valley nearly three hundred years.

Nepal, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is a landlocked sovereign state located in South Asia. It is located in the Himalayas and bordered to the north by the People's Republic of China, and to the south, east, and west by the Republic of India. With an area of 147,181 square kilometres (56,827 sq mi) and a population of approximately 30 million, Nepal is the world's 93rd largest country by land mass and the 41st most populous country. Kathmandu is the nation's capital and the country's largest metropolis. Nepal has a rich geography. The mountainous north has eight of the world's ten tallest mountains, including the highest point on Earth, Mount Everest, called Sagarmatha in Nepali. It contains more than 240 peaks over 20,000 ft (6,096 m) above sea level. The fertile and humid south is heavily urbanized. By some measures, Hinduism is practised by a larger majority of people in Nepal than in any other nation. Buddhism, though a minority faith in the country, is linked historically with Nepal. Many Nepali do not distinguish between Hinduism and Buddhism and follow both religious traditions. There are 3 different buddhist traditions: Himalayan Buddhism, Buddhism of Kathmandu Valley (mostly Mahayana and Vajrayana), and also the Theravada Buddhism. A monarchy throughout most of its history, Nepal was ruled by the Shah dynasty of kings from 1768, when Prithvi Narayan Shah unified its many small kingdoms. However, a decade-long Civil War by the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) and several weeks of mass protests by all major political parties led to the 12 point agreement of November 22, 2005. The ensuing elections for the constituent assembly on May 28, 2008 overwhelmingly favored the abdication of the Nepali monarch Gyanendra Shah and the establishment of a federal multiparty representative democratic republic. The first President of Nepal, Ram Baran Yadav, was sworn in on July 23, 2008. ( source Wikipedia )

The earthquake memorial in Bhugol Park shortly after its inauguration in 1941 AD. In September 1938 Prime Minister Juddha Shumshere Rana cancelled all debts on loans given to people before the earthquake for construction. The loan papers were gathered in the pillar which supports the globe. “This was built to commemorate the rebuilding efforts after the Great Nepal Bihar earthquake. Many people contributed money to rebuild the city and all their receipts are buried here!” declared my enthusiastic friend. He was referring to the most recent and devastating earthquake in Nepal, a 8.4 shocker that killed more than 8,000 people and leveled more than 120,000 buildings, back in 1934 AD. That was a lot of damage, considering the fact that Nepal back in those days didn’t many people and buildings. But the park’s historical significance was soon lost, as Kathmandu saw wave after wave of urban migrants, who started to claim the park as their own – annexing the park with illegal shacks, public toilets, and litter dumps. Coupled with administrative negligence, the park was allowed to fester, until youth groups came along to reclaim it. My chest-thumping friend was all too eager to relate how they chased away the squatters, cleaned up the park and obtained official permission from the authorities to “take care” of the park. Today, the park is fenced up, gated, and open only 2 hours in the morning for the public to “take in fresh air”. It was a welcome oasis from the frenetic pace of New Road, a perfect location for a picnic, and of course, for an outdoor exhibition. The second leg of our exhibition – “Bahini: Life of My Sisters“- was officially open last Saturday, and the turnout was surprising. I suspect the “free admission” had a part to play, but the location was just perfect. Of all the visitors I talked to, all of them had visited the show “by chance”. Some of them had known about the first leg in the papers, but that was in Nepal Arts Council – a gallery – and it wasn’t exactly the most convenient of locations. So, it was a pleasant surprise that many of those who couldn’t make the gallery, or those who simply weren’t the gallery-going types, managed to catch our exhibition in its “photo-cum-installation art” avatar. Yes, the summer heat is punishing, the temperamental rain showers are annoying, and the glare reflecting off our photo frames – irritatingly distracting. But there was something “organic” about the feel of the exhibition. Our pictures aimed to show how Nepali girls struggle against their environment to go to school. Our “little sisters”, or bahini, were up against problems such as prejudice, poverty and parental negligence, and yet, their yearning for better lives through education shone through. Bhugol Park resonates that kind of spirit – a ground-up resilience that fought off filth, rot and decay. So it was a perfect fit, albeit unintentional, that the pictures sprung up from the grassy lawns, like blooming flowers after the long harsh winter. Kathmandu is decaying, many are saying. They are dead right – a city of one million – without proper sewage, waste management, urban zoning, migration control, pollution control measures, water supply, and nary a decent park – is heading down the dumps, literally. The Economist recently ranked it the 8th worst city in the world, following closely behind the likes of Karachi, Kabul, and Mogadishu. Kathmanduites didn’t know what to think of it – those who live here and have been abroad know that the ranking is not unfair, but really, ke garne? (what to do?) What Kathmandu needs is more Bhugol Parks, and more people who really care about the place they live in. And hopefully it doesn’t take another mega-earthquake to jolt the society into action.

http://www.Pangeality.com Walking in downtown Kathmandu near Asan Tole I was looking for a place to enlarge some photos and was pleasantly surprised to learn that the shop I was in was a 4th generation photographer with a family legacy of documenting the history of Nepal. His great great grandfather had been a craftsman at the royal palace and the king specifically recognized his talent and sent him to Calcutta India to learn photography and return to be the royal photographer. Here, Bhusan Shreshta tells me about his shop and family history, shares his camera collection and talks photography in Nepal. There are many other videos about Nepal on my channel.

Ancient Kathmandu Old Kathmandu Photos HISTORY of NEPAL boudhanath Machhendranath the old KATHMANDU Old Memories of Kathmandu,Nepal Old Kathmandu, 100 years old photos of Nepal. Kathmandu - The Most Beautiful City in the World Kathmandu (/ˌkɑːtmɑːnˈduː/; Nepali pronunciation: [kɑʈʰmɑɳɖu]) is the capital and largest municipality of Nepal. It also hosts the headquarters of SAARC. It is the only city of Nepal with the administrative status of Mahanagar (Metropolitan City), as compared to Upa-Mahanagar (Sub-Metropolitan City) or Nagar (City). Kathmandu is the core of Nepal's largest urban agglomeration located in the Kathmandu Valley consisting of Lalitpur, Kirtipur, Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur and a number of smaller communities. Kathmandu is also known informally as "KTM" or the "tri-city". According to the 2011 census, Kathmandu Metropolitan City has a population of 975,453 and measures 49.45 square kilometres (19.09 sq mi). The city stands at an elevation of approximately 1,400 metres (4,600 ft) in the bowl-shaped Kathmandu Valley of central Nepal.[5] It is surrounded by four major hills: Shivapuri, Phulchoki, Nagarjun, and Chandragiri. Kathmandu Valley is part of three districts (Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur), has the highest population density in the country, and is home to about a twelfth of Nepal's population. Historically, the Kathmandu Valley and adjoining areas were known as Nepal Mandala. Until the 15th century, Bhaktapur was its capital when two other capitals, Kathmandu and Lalitpur, were established. During the Rana and Shah eras, British historians called the valley itself "Nepal Proper". Today, Kathmandu is not only the capital of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, but also the headquarters of the Bagmati Zone and the Central Development Region of Nepal. Kathmandu is the gateway to tourism in Nepal. It is also the hub of the country's economy. It has the most advanced infrastructure of any urban area in Nepal, and its economy is focused on tourism, which accounted for 3.8% of Nepal's GDP in 1995/96. Tourism in Kathmandu declined thereafter during a period of political unrest, but since then has improved. In 2013, Kathmandu was ranked third among the top 10 travel destinations on the rise in the world by TripAdvisor, and ranked first in Asia. The city has a rich history, spanning nearly 2000 years, as inferred from inscriptions found in the valley. Religious and cultural festivities form a major part of the lives of people residing in Kathmandu. Most of Kathmandu's people follow Hinduism and many others follow Buddhism. There are people of other religious beliefs as well, giving Kathmandu a cosmopolitan culture. Nepali is the most commonly spoken language in the city. English is understood by Kathmandu's educated residents. Historic areas of Kathmandu were devastated by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on 25 April 2015.Archaeological excavations in parts of Kathmandu have found evidence of ancient civilizations. The oldest of these findings is a statue, found in Maligaon, that was dated at 185 AD.The excavation of Dhando Chaitya uncovered a brick with an inscription in Brahmi script. Archaeologists believe it is two thousand years old. Stone inscriptions are an ubiquitous element at heritage sites and are key sources for the history of Nepal The earliest Western reference to Kathmandu appears in an account of Jesuit Fathers Johann Grueber and Albert d'Orville. In 1661, they passed through Nepal on their way from Tibet to India, and reported that they reached "Cadmendu, the capital of the Kingdom of Necbal".
